About La Madeleine Church
La Madeleine is a neoclassical church in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, designed to resemble a Greek temple rather than a traditional place of worship. Construction began in 1764 under Louis XV and took 78 years to complete, passing through the French Revolution and Napoleon's reign before finally being consecrated in 1845. Napoleon originally intended the building as a Temple of Glory for his army, which explains its striking exterior of 52 Corinthian columns, each 20 meters tall, with no cross, bell tower, or spire.

In 1837, before the church was consecrated, there was a serious official proposal to convert the unfinished building into Paris's first railway station. The plan was ultimately rejected and Gare Saint-Lazare was built instead, but the Madeleine came remarkably close to becoming a train terminal.
