About Hôtel de la Marine
The Hôtel de la Marine occupies one of two identical 18th-century palaces designed by architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel on the north side of Place de la Concorde, completed in 1774. The building originally served as headquarters for the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne, the institution responsible for storing and managing royal furniture, tapestries, and precious objects. After the French Revolution, the French Navy Ministry took over the building in 1789 and remained there for over two centuries until 2015.

In September 1792, a gang of thieves broke into the Garde-Meuble and stole most of the French Crown Jewels, including the 45-carat Hope Diamond and the Regent Diamond. The theft took place over several nights through ground-floor windows. While most jewels were eventually recovered, some disappeared forever, and the Hope Diamond resurfaced decades later in London.
