About Ramparts of Saint-Lô
The Ramparts of Saint-Lô are medieval stone fortifications encircling the historic upper town, built in the 13th-14th centuries by the Bishops of Coutances who ruled as barons of the city. Three sides of the original four-sided walls remain standing, including the Tour des Beaux-Regards tower offering panoramic views over the Vire River valley and the Tour de la Poudrière (Powder Tower). " Paradoxically, the bombardment revealed the ramparts by destroying buildings that had hidden them since the 19th century.

Legend credits Charlemagne with building the first wooden fortifications here around 800 AD to defend against Viking raids. The Vikings destroyed these original defenses in 890, and the ramparts were rebuilt in 1025 under Bishop Herbert II before the current stone walls were constructed.
