About Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul Church, Rueil-Malmaison
Classified as a Historic Monument since 1941, this church in Rueil-Malmaison dates back to the 12th century, though the current structure was begun in 1584 on the order of exiled Portuguese King Antoine I. The classical Jesuit-style facade was completed in 1635 under Cardinal Richelieu's patronage, designed by architect Jacques Lemercier, who also designed the Palais-Royal and the Sorbonne chapel. The 40-metre nave with its 13-metre-high vault is supported by 14 pillars.

Joséphine's marble tomb was sculpted by Pierre Cartellier, one of the leading neoclassical sculptors in France. Because the Restoration government had forbidden any imperial symbols, Cartellier had to replace the diadem on her head with a simple comb. Her children spent over ten years fighting political obstacles before the monument was finally completed and her remains transferred into it on 28 September 1825.
