About Malmaison Castle
The Château de Malmaison served as the private residence of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Joséphine from 1799 to 1809, and functioned as the second seat of the French government alongside the Tuileries during the Consulate period (1800-1802). The château houses period furniture, Napoleonic artifacts, portraits, and personal belongings of the imperial couple, including Napoleon's death mask cast on Saint Helena in 1821. Visitors can walk through the Council Chamber designed as a military tent, Joséphine's bedchamber with paintings by Redouté, and the library with mahogany columns concealing kitchen flues.

Josephine purchased the estate in 1799 for 325,000 francs while Napoleon was campaigning in Egypt. When he returned and saw the price, he was furious — but eventually accepted the purchase. Architects Percier and Fontaine renovated the property, and Napoleon insisted on restoring the existing structure rather than rebuilding from scratch to control costs.
