About Saint-Sauveur Church
The Église Saint-Sauveur is a Gothic parish church built between 1220-1350, originally constructed to serve workers building Richard the Lionheart's Château Gaillard fortress. The church features a rare Greek cross floor plan with four equal branches of 29 meters each, and a distinctive 47-meter wooden spire that defines the Petit-Andely neighborhood skyline. Inside, visitors can admire the 1674 Ingout organ - one of the oldest functioning organs in France - along with 13th-century sculptures, 16th-century frescoes in the choir, and a magnificent Louis XIV altarpiece from the Abbaye de Mortemer.

At the entrance to the choir, look up to find two carved stone faces on opposing pillars - one laughing and one crying. These medieval sculptures are believed to represent the duality of human emotion, and have gazed down at worshippers for over 700 years.
