Castle of Fougères-sur-Bièvre

Step through the fortified gatehouse of the Château de Fougères-sur-Bièvre and face a question posed by the monument itself: true fortress or architectural bluff? Built from 1465 by Pierre de Refuge, royal treasurer to Louis XI, the exterior bristles with cannon loops, machicolations, and a drawbridge — yet none were ever intended for combat. Inside, the contrast deepens: a refined Renaissance courtyard with mullioned windows and an arcaded gallery added around 1510 reveals the castle's true nature as a noble residence. Visitors can climb through rooms on multiple levels, peer into the 11th-century keep embedded within the later construction, and examine the exposed medieval timber roof framework up close. The castle closes on Tuesdays during winter months and observes a midday break (12:30–14:00); booking is not required but arriving at opening time ensures an unhurried visit.
