About Château de Fougères-sur-Bièvre
Built from 1465 by Pierre de Refuge, treasurer to King Louis XI, this Loire Valley castle presents a striking contradiction: its exterior bristles with military features — cannon loops, machicolations, a drawbridge, and a crenellated wall walk — yet it was constructed over a decade after the Hundred Years' War ended, in flat terrain with no strategic value. The fortifications were political theater, a display of power for the royal court. Step through the gatehouse and the mood shifts entirely: the inner courtyard reveals refined Renaissance decoration, mullioned windows, and an arcaded gallery inspired by the nearby Château de Blois, added around 1510-1520 by Jean de Villebresme.

When Paris fell under threat during World War II, the castle served as a secret depot for masterpieces evacuated from the Louvre. The famous "Lady and the Unicorn" tapestry (now in the Musée de Cluny) and stained glass panels from Chartres Cathedral were among the works sheltered within these walls.
