About Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire
The Château de Chaumont-sur-Loire sits on a bluff above the Loire River, part of the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley. Originally a 10th-century fortress, the current structure dates from 1465–1510, rebuilt after Louis XI ordered the earlier castle destroyed following Pierre d'Amboise's failed rebellion. Catherine de Medici acquired it in 1550 and later forced her husband's mistress Diane de Poitiers to accept Chaumont in exchange for Château de Chenonceau after Henri II's death in 1559.
