About Ambacia Wine Cellars
Caves Ambacia is a troglodyte wine cellar carved into the limestone cliffs along the Loire River in Amboise. The cellars date back to 1463, when King Louis XI decreed that wines from Amboise vineyards be sold at the Tours market before all others. The Duhard family of barrel makers took over the site in 1874 and began assembling a collection of Vouvray vintages that now spans over 150 consecutive years.

The name "Ambacia" is the Latin name for Amboise, connecting the cellars to the town's pre-Roman roots. Just 320 metres from the caves lies the Fanum des Châteliers, an archaeological site of an ancient Gaulish-Roman fortified settlement — the on-site bistro is named "L'Oppidum" as a nod to this connection.
