About Royal Domain of Château Gaillard
The Royal Domain of Château Gaillard is a Renaissance estate in Amboise, created from 1496 after King Charles VIII returned from his Italian Campaign captivated by the gardens of Naples. He brought 22 Italian artisans to Touraine, including Dom Pacello da Mercogliano, then considered Europe's finest gardener, who established France's first Renaissance gardens and first royal orangery on this site. The 15-hectare grounds are organized around seven themed walking paths inspired by biblical rivers, with a royal orangery housing over 300 citrus trees across 85 varieties.
