Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil

Step through the fortified gates of Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil, a medieval stronghold nicknamed the little Carcassonne for its octagonal curtain wall ringed by nine round towers and a wide moat. A guided tour of the interior reveals rooms furnished with Colbert-era artifacts and a Renaissance logis built under Louis XII between 1500 and 1505, still owned by the same family since 1467. Afterward, wander the six-hectare grounds at your own pace — a rose garden with 160 heritage varieties, five walled chartreuse gardens each with its own theme, and quiet Renaissance water features. The château is open seasonally from late March through late September, with reduced hours and Tuesday closures in spring and autumn. Tours are primarily in French; an audio guide is available via app in English, Spanish, and Flemish.
