About Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil
The Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil is a medieval fortress and Renaissance residence in the Berry region of central France, nicknamed "the little Carcassonne" for its remarkably preserved octagonal fortified enclosure with nine circular towers surrounded by a wide moat. The outer walls date to the late 13th century and follow Capetian military architecture designed to deflect projectiles, while the interior Corps de Logis was built between 1500 and 1505 in the Flamboyant Gothic and early Italian Renaissance style of Louis XII. The estate has been owned by the same family — the Chevenon de Bigny line — since December 14, 1467, making it one of the longest unbroken private ownerships of any castle in France.

After the catastrophic French defeat at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356, the Château d'Ainay-le-Vieil was reportedly the only fortress in the entire region that remained in French hands. The Sully family used it as a base to harass English forces throughout the Hundred Years' War, and the castle was never captured.
