About Noirlac Abbey
Noirlac Abbey is one of Europe's best-preserved Cistercian monasteries, founded in 1136 by monks from the Abbey of Clairvaux under the influence of Saint Bernard. The complex retains its complete medieval layout: a Romanesque-Gothic church with a distinctive flat east end, four-gallery cloister, chapter house, monks' dormitory, refectory, and lay brothers' wing with cellier. In 1977, artist Jean-Pierre Raynaud installed 34 contemporary stained-glass windows — the first modern glazing placed in a French national monument — which fill the austere interiors with vivid colored light.

The abbey served as a porcelain factory from 1822 to the late 19th century, connected to the Pillivuyt manufacturing group. Ironically, this industrial reuse helped preserve the medieval buildings at a time when many abandoned French abbeys crumbled into ruin.
