About Montrond Fortress
The Forteresse de Montrond sits on a round limestone hill overlooking the confluence of the Cher and Marmande rivers. First fortified in the 13th century, the site was transformed in the 1630s by architect Jean Sarrazin into a fully bastioned fortress for the Prince de Condé — the only such fortification built in central France. During the Fronde civil war in 1651-1652, the garrison endured an eleven-month siege before surrendering.

Louis II de Bourbon, known as the Grand Condé and considered one of France's greatest military commanders, was born within the fortress walls in 1621. He would later lead the very rebellion — the Fronde — that resulted in the fortress being besieged and ultimately ordered destroyed by Louis XIV.
