About Saint-Amand Church
This Romanesque parish church dates from the late 11th to early 12th century, built on the site of a 7th-century priory on the left bank of the Marmande river. The building blends northern Aquitaine and southern Ile-de-France architectural traditions, with both barrel vaults and ribbed vaults visible inside. The interior holds sculpted Romanesque capitals depicting human figures, animals, and birds, along with 19th- and 20th-century stained glass windows by makers including Max Ingrand.

The church was deliberately built slightly below street level so that sunlight would not enter and disturb worshippers' contemplation — an uncommon medieval architectural choice that visitors still notice when stepping down through the entrance.
