About Calouste Gulbenkian Park
This 33-hectare estate on Mont Canisy heights near Deauville was created in 1937 by Calouste Gulbenkian, an Armenian oil magnate and art collector who sought a personal retreat for meditation. Landscape architect Achille Duchêne designed the grounds, blending French formal parterre gardens, English naturalistic layouts, and Italian-style cypress groves with balustrades. The park contains 58 species of rare trees including American black walnut, sequoia, Himalayan cedar, Siberian elm, and centuries-old lindens planted since the 18th century.

Calouste Gulbenkian was known as 'Mr. Five Percent' because he owned 5% of shares in major European oil companies operating in the Arabian Peninsula. His fortune from oil allowed him to become one of the 20th century's greatest art collectors, and his art collection is now housed in the famous Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, Portugal.
