About Champ de Mars
5-hectare public park stretching between the Eiffel Tower and the École Militaire in Paris's 7th arrondissement. Named after Mars, the Roman god of war, the grounds served as military training fields for the adjacent military academy from the 18th century. The park hosted the first Bastille Day celebration on July 14, 1790, and later became the site of multiple World Expositions, including the 1889 fair that introduced the Eiffel Tower.

On July 17, 1791, the Champ de Mars was the site of the Massacre du Champ de Mars, when the National Guard opened fire on a crowd of around 50,000 people who had gathered to sign a petition demanding the removal of King Louis XVI. Over 50 people were killed, and the event deepened the rift between moderate and radical factions of the French Revolution.
