About Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac
The Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac houses nearly 370,000 works from the indigenous arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, though only about 3,500 objects are displayed at any time. Designed by architect Jean Nouvel and opened in 2006, the building sits elevated on stilts above an 18,000-square-meter garden designed by Gilles Clément, with vegetation flowing freely underneath the structure. The northwest facade features a 800-square-meter living wall by botanist Patrick Blanc, covered with 15,000 plants from around the world.

The museum was originally planned to be called 'Musée des Arts premiers' (Museum of First Arts), but the name was dropped before opening due to concerns that the term 'arts premiers' carried ethnocentric connotations. It was renamed in 2016 to honor former President Jacques Chirac, who initiated the project in the late 1990s.
