About National Museum of Asian Arts - Guimet
The Musée Guimet houses France's foremost collection of Asian art, spanning civilizations from Afghanistan to Japan across 5,500 square meters of exhibition space. Founded in 1889 by Lyon industrialist Émile Guimet, the museum began as a collection of religious artifacts gathered during his travels through Egypt, Japan, China, and India. In 1945 it absorbed the Louvre's entire Asian art department, transforming it into one of Europe's most comprehensive Asian art institutions.

In March 1905, the future spy Mata Hari gave her first major public performance in the museum's historic library. She performed what she claimed were sacred Javanese Hindu temple dances before an audience that included Japanese and German ambassadors. Émile Guimet himself helped construct the fictional backstory that she was born in Java to a Hindu priestly family — all fabricated for theatrical effect.
