About Museum of Mankind
The Museum of Mankind occupies the Passy wing of the Palais de Chaillot, directly facing the Eiffel Tower across the Seine. Originally opened in 1938 as a combined museum and research laboratory under the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, it underwent a major 52-million-euro renovation and reopened in October 2015 with a completely redesigned permanent gallery. The 2,500 m² Galerie de l'Homme explores three questions — Who are we?

Within days of the Nazi occupation of Paris in June 1940, museum staff including librarian Yvonne Oddon and ethnologists Boris Vildé and Anatole Lewitsky formed one of France's earliest organized resistance networks on museum premises. The network grew to over 100 members engaged in intelligence gathering, propaganda, and escape operations. In February 1942, seven members including Vildé and Lewitsky were executed by firing squad at Mont Valérien.
