About Sancerre Castle
The Château de Sancerre sits atop the hilltop that dominates the Loire Valley wine town, combining a working wine estate with the remains of an 11th-century fortress. The original castle was erected by Etienne Ier de Sancerre and later demolished by order of Louis XIII in 1620, leaving only the 14th-century Tour des Fiefs — a 28-meter medieval tower now classified as a Historic Monument. The current château building dates from 1874, designed in Louis XII revival style by architect Clément Parent.
