About Briare Church of Saint Stephen
Built between 1890 and 1895, this Romano-Byzantine church stands out for its extraordinary interior covered entirely in mosaics made from locally produced Briare enamels. The decorative program was designed by Eugène Grasset, a leading Art Nouveau artist, and was declared his masterpiece by the magazine Art & Décoration in 1903. The floor mosaics symbolically represent the Five Senses, the Four Elements, and the River of Life through stages from childhood to old age.

The church sits on a site with religious significance dating back to the 6th century. An earlier chapel here may have replaced a Roman temple dedicated to Bacchus, the god of wine — an unusual predecessor for a Christian place of worship.
