About Château-Musée de Gien
The Château-Musée de Gien sits on a hilltop above the Loire River, built between 1482 and 1493 for Anne de Beaujeu, eldest daughter of King Louis XI and regent of France. The castle is one of the earliest examples of First French Renaissance architecture, distinguished by its decorative red and black brick patterns laid over cut stone. Since 1952, it houses the International Hunting Museum, holding around 15,000 works spanning five centuries.

When German bombers attacked Gien on June 15-16, 1940, they destroyed most of the town center. The castle was one of the very few monuments left standing amid the ruins, which later influenced the decision to establish a museum inside it rather than leave it as an administrative building.
