About Gien Church of Saint Joan of Arc
This post-WWII parish church stands on Place du Château beside the Château de Gien, overlooking the Loire River. The previous church on this site, Saint-Pierre, was destroyed by German bombing on June 15, 1940, during a fire that devastated Gien for three days. Only the 15th-century stone bell tower survived and was integrated into the new structure designed by architects Paul and Jean Gelis, inaugurated in 1954.

The organ sits behind the altar in the choir rather than in the traditional rear gallery. This unusual placement was a structural necessity: the surviving medieval bell tower, integrated at the back of the church, could not support the weight of a pipe organ. The current instrument was built by organ maker Y. Koenig in 1986, replacing the original by Roethinger of Strasbourg.
