About Church of Notre-Dame de Sancerre
The Church of Notre-Dame de Sancerre stands on Place Saint-Jean, on the site of a 13th-century church of Saint-Jean that was destroyed when the adjacent belfry's spire collapsed in 1725. Construction of the current building began in 1658 but was interrupted and resumed in 1752 following plans by Royal Engineer Gendrier, with the church blessed in 1762. The building was significantly enlarged in 1867 by architect Charles Guillard, who added two bays, an apse, and absidioles to the nave.

Sancerre was one of the last Protestant strongholds in France during the Wars of Religion. After the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in August 1572, Huguenots took refuge in the hilltop town. The ensuing siege lasted a full year until August 1573, with over 500 inhabitants dying of famine. The old Saint-Jean church that stood on this site would have witnessed those events firsthand.
