About Galeries Lafayette
Galeries Lafayette Haussmann is a grand department store on Boulevard Haussmann, founded in 1893 by cousins Théophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn as a small 70-square-metre haberdashery. The store's centrepiece is a 43-metre-high Art Nouveau dome completed in 1912, featuring 1,000 square metres of stained glass designed by Jacques Gruber and ironwork by Louis Majorelle, both masters of the École de Nancy. The complex spans three buildings — the main Coupole store for women's fashion and beauty, a dedicated men's store, and a five-floor gourmet and home store with a wine cellar and cooking workshops.

On 19 January 1919, WWI aviation hero Jules Védrines landed a Caudron G.3 biplane on the store's rooftop to win a 25,000-franc prize (roughly €200,000 today). The roof was only 28 metres long and 30 metres above the boulevard, surrounded by chimneys. He was fined just 16 francs for the stunt. Védrines died in a plane crash three months later.
