About Gustave Moreau Museum
The Gustave Moreau Museum occupies the townhouse where the French Symbolist painter lived and worked for most of his life, at 14 rue de La Rochefoucauld in the 9th arrondissement. Moreau himself designed the conversion of his home into a public museum in 1895, three years before his death, hiring architect Albert Lafon to build two large studio floors above the existing private apartments. The collection holds over 14,000 works: around 850 oil paintings, 350 watercolors, and more than 13,000 drawings stored in specially designed rotating display panels.

Moreau taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where his students included Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault, and Albert Marquet — three painters who would go on to lead the Fauvism movement. His open-minded teaching style, encouraging personal expression over academic conformity, directly shaped the direction of early 20th-century art.
