About Les Invalides
Les Invalides is one of Paris's most impressive architectural complexes, originally commissioned by King Louis XIV in 1670 as a hospital and retirement home for wounded soldiers. The vast compound, designed by Libéral Bruant and later enhanced by Jules Hardouin-Mansart's magnificent gilded dome, remains one of the finest examples of French Baroque architecture in the city.

Napoleon's sarcophagus is made from red quartzite (often called porphyry) sourced from Finland and weighs over 5 tonnes. It took more than 20 years from his death in 1821 to the final placement of his remains in the Dome Church in 1861, involving a dramatic return voyage from Saint Helena in 1840.
