About Maison Sublime
La Maison Sublime is the oldest Jewish monument in France and likely in all of Western Europe, dating back to around 1100 CE. This extraordinary Romanesque building was discovered in 1976 during excavation work beneath the courtyard of the Palais de Justice (Courthouse) in Rouen, where it had remained hidden underground for centuries. 5 meters wide with walls up to 4 meters thick.

The Maison Sublime remained hidden underground for over 450 years before its accidental discovery on August 13, 1976. Construction workers were simply repaving the courtyard of the Palais de Justice when they broke through into this remarkably preserved medieval structure that had been deliberately buried when the Parliament of Normandy was expanded in the late 15th century.
