Saint Martin Church (Église Saint-Martin)
About Saint Martin Church (Église Saint-Martin)
Église Saint-Martin in L'Aigle is an 11th-century church that showcases five distinct architectural periods from Romanesque to contemporary. Founded by the Lords of L'Aigle, it expanded through the Gothic Flamboyant and Renaissance eras, surviving a sacking during the Wars of Religion in 1567. After WWII bombing destroyed the southern windows in 1944, the church became a pioneering example of integrating contemporary art into historic monuments. The seven stained glass windows by master glazier Max Ingrand, installed in 1947, use warm colors on the south and cool tones on the north side. Nine exterior niches on the south façade hold contemporary sculptures by artists including Paul Belmondo. The church also houses a 1923 organ by Charles Mutin, currently under restoration until 2026.
Interesting Facts
The "Porcienne" bell, cast between 1426 and 1499, is over 500 years old and has been classified as a Monument Historique since 1971. It remains one of the oldest objects in the church, having survived centuries of conflict and destruction.
During the French Revolution, the church was converted into a "Temple of Reason and the Supreme Being" and used as a meeting hall and warehouse. It was only returned to religious use after the revolutionary period ended.
The contemporary sculptures on the south façade were created by Paul Belmondo, father of famous French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo. His son became one of France's biggest cinema stars, but Paul Belmondo was a renowned sculptor in his own right, winning the Prix de Rome in 1921.
