Escape the capital to Nemours, a quiet medieval town set on a natural island where the Loing river splits around half-timbered houses and stone bridges. The 12th-century Château-Musée — the oldest intact fortress-castle in Île-de-France — holds original prints by Dürer, Rembrandt, and Goya, with optional VR headsets that reconstruct its medieval interiors. Nearby, the Church of Saint John the Baptist layers five centuries of architecture under one roof and preserves a rare 1654 organ with most of its original pipework. The day ends at the Museum of Prehistory of Île-de-France, a Roland Simounet brutalist landmark housing 600,000 years of human history, from record-length Paleolithic flint blades to a 9,000-year-old dugout canoe. The Château-Musée is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and both museums break for lunch 12:30–14:00 — aim for Thursday or Friday.
