About Château-Musée de Nemours
The Château-Musée de Nemours is a 12th-century fortress-castle built by Gauthier Ier de Villebéon, Grand Chamberlain to Kings Louis VII and Philippe Auguste. Constructed from local Souppes-sur-Loing limestone between 1160 and 1190, it is considered the oldest intact fortress-castle in the Île-de-France region. The square keep rises 30 metres and is reinforced by four round corner turrets connected by a narrow gallery.

The museum's most famous painting is "La Morphine" by Albert Matignon (1905), depicting two women in the act of injecting morphine. It is one of the few French paintings of its era to directly address drug addiction, making it a striking example of social realism within the Symbolist movement.
