About Nemours Old Town
The historic center of Nemours sits on a natural island formed by the Loing river, the Loing Canal, and the Petits-Fossés, a 14th-century artificial waterway dug for defense. The official tourist circuit covers 16 stops over roughly 75 minutes, starting from the 12th-century Château de Nemours courtyard at 28 rue Gautier 1er. Visitors walk past half-timbered houses on rue Gaston Darley, the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste with its 60-meter spire and 15th-century stained glass, and the Grand Pont inaugurated by Pope Pius VII in 1804.

The Treaty of Nemours, signed here on July 7, 1585, was brokered by Catherine de' Medici and the Duke of Guise. It revoked all religious freedoms for French Protestants and triggered the War of the Three Henries — the final and bloodiest phase of the French Wars of Religion. Pope Sixtus V subsequently excommunicated the Protestant heir Henry of Navarre, who later became King Henry IV.
