About Museum of Prehistory of Île-de-France
The Museum of Prehistory of Île-de-France sits on the edge of the Poligny Forest near Nemours, housing over 2 million archaeological objects from the Paris Basin region. Opened in 1981, the museum traces human presence in Île-de-France from 600,000 years ago through the end of the Gallic period, with around 3,400 artifacts on permanent display across seven chronologically arranged galleries. The building itself, designed by architect Roland Simounet in raw exposed concrete that echoes the surrounding sandstone, earned Historic Monument status in 2002 — the first 20th-century structure in Seine-et-Marne to receive this classification.

Architect Roland Simounet designed the museum's interior ramps connecting gallery levels as a deliberate metaphor for human evolution — visitors physically ascend through the building just as human civilisation progressed upward through the ages. Simounet also transformed the Hôtel Salé into the Musée Picasso in Paris and designed the Musée d'Art Moderne in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, but architecture historians consider the Nemours museum his finest work.
