About Abbaye de Fleury
The Abbaye de Fleury is an active Benedictine monastery founded around 640 AD on the north bank of the Loire, about 30 km upstream from Orléans. The abbey gained its historical importance around 660 when monks brought back the relics of Saint Benedict of Nursia from the ruins of Monte Cassino in Italy — a claim still disputed by the Italian abbey to this day. The basilica's tower-porch, built between 1020 and 1035 under Abbot Gauzlin, stands as one of the earliest and finest examples of Romanesque architecture in France, with 50 columns topped by carved capitals depicting biblical scenes and fantastical creatures.

Opening Hours
Abbot Gauzlin, who commissioned the tower-porch between 1020 and 1035, was the illegitimate son of King Hugh Capet, founder of the Capetian dynasty. He declared the tower would be "a light for all of Gaul" — a bold statement of both monastic ambition and royal patronage.
