About Château de Sully-sur-Loire
The Château de Sully-sur-Loire is a medieval fortress on the south bank of the Loire River, built to control one of the few natural fording points along the river. The current keep dates from 1395-1401, constructed for Guy de La Trémoille and his wife Marie de Sully, with walls over 4 meters thick and four corner towers. In 1602, the estate was purchased by Maximilien de Béthune, who became the 1st Duke of Sully — one of France's most powerful finance ministers under King Henry IV.

Voltaire lived at the castle from 1716 to 1719 after being exiled from Paris. Rather than lying low, he staged elaborate theatrical performances in the courtyard for invited Parisian guests and wrote parts of his epic poem "La Henriade" during his stay.
