About Barbizon School Museum
The Musée départemental des peintres de Barbizon is housed in the historic Auberge Ganne, a former inn where landscape painters of the Barbizon School gathered between 1830 and 1875. The museum, which opened in 1995 after careful restoration, showcases approximately 100 works by artists including Théodore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet, Camille Corot, and Narcisse Diaz de la Peña.

Artists staying at the Auberge Ganne couldn't always afford to pay their bills, so they sometimes settled their debts by painting directly on the inn's walls, doors, and furniture. These improvised "payments" are now the museum's most treasured artworks, preserved exactly where they were created over 150 years ago.
