About Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis
The Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis stands as one of the most historically significant religious buildings in France, widely regarded as the birthplace of Gothic architecture. Its choir, completed in 1144 under the direction of Abbot Suger, was the first structure to systematically use pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and large stained-glass windows together, creating the revolutionary light-filled aesthetic that would define European cathedral building for centuries.
