About Bourges Cathedral
Bourges Cathedral is a 13th-century Gothic church built between 1195 and 1230, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Unlike nearly all major French Gothic cathedrals, it has no transept — the interior forms one continuous rectangular space with five parallel aisles, creating an uninterrupted sightline from entrance to choir across 120 meters. The stepped cross-section rises through five distinct levels, allowing light to flood every part of the building.

The south tower is called the "Deaf Tower" (Tour Sourde) because it never received any bells. Structural cracks appeared in 1313 during construction, and engineers reinforced it with a massive buttress rather than risk adding the weight of bronze bells. It stands at only 58 meters, shorter than its northern counterpart.
