About Estève Museum
The Estève Museum occupies the Hôtel des Échevins, a late 15th-century civic building constructed between 1489 and 1492 as Bourges' city hall. The museum houses 216 works by Maurice Estève (1904–2001), a Berry-born painter who became one of the leading figures of French lyrical abstraction alongside Bazaine, Manessier, and Bissière. The collection spans oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, collages, tapestries, and lithographs, arranged chronologically across three floors connected by a Gothic spiral staircase.

The Hôtel des Échevins was inaugurated in 1492 — the same year Columbus reached the Americas. Construction began in 1489, making the building older than many of France's Renaissance châteaux. It was built directly on top of Gallo-Roman ramparts, so the foundations date back nearly two thousand years.
