About Berry Museum
The Berry Museum occupies the Hôtel Cujas, a 16th-century Renaissance townhouse in central Bourges, and serves as the city's principal historical and archaeological museum. Founded in 1834 by magistrate Claude-Denis Mater, the collection moved to its current building in 1891 and holds approximately 55,000 objects spanning antiquity to the 19th century. The ground floor houses an extensive Gallo-Roman archaeology section with over 220 funerary steles from ancient Avaricum, plus an Egyptian room containing the mummy of Djehdor, a 4th-century BC priest.

The building takes its name from Jacques Cujas, one of the most influential legal scholars of the Renaissance. He taught at the University of Bourges, which was then among Europe's leading law schools, and owned this townhouse from 1585 until his death in 1590. Before becoming a museum, the building served as a gendarmerie barracks starting in 1829.
