About Prés Fichaux Garden
5-hectare Art Deco public park in Bourges, designed by landscape architect Paul Margueritat between 1922 and 1930. Built on former marshland that required 100,000 cubic metres of imported earth and 6 kilometres of drainage pipes, the garden blends French formal design with Art Deco geometry. Visitors can walk among sculpted hornbeam hedges, rigorously trimmed yew arches shaped into cones and pyramids, magnolia arcades, and rose gardens.

The construction cost of 1.8 million francs outraged Bourges residents, who nicknamed the project 'the abyss of the Pres Fichaux.' The expense was considered excessive for transforming what many saw as useless marshland into a decorative park.
