About Bourges Marshes
A 135-hectare urban marshland stretching from the foot of Bourges' medieval center, just a few hundred meters from the Cathedral of Saint-Etienne. The site contains over 1,500 individual garden parcels divided between two marshy areas — the Marais de l'Yèvre and the Marais de la Voiselle — connected by a network of waterways and dike footpaths. Cultivation here dates back to the 8th century, and for three centuries local maraîchers supplied the city with produce from these plots.
Bourges Marshes — Planning Your Visit
Open 24/7
This attraction is accessible at any time, no specific opening hours required.
The marshes originally served as a natural defensive moat for medieval Bourges. The boggy terrain made it nearly impossible for armies to approach the city walls from the north, making the marshes as strategically important as any stone fortification.
