About Jacques Coeur Palace
The Palais Jacques-Cœur is a 15th-century Gothic civil palace built between 1443 and 1451 for Jacques Cœur, the wealthiest merchant in medieval France and financial treasurer to King Charles VII. Around 20 rooms surround a central courtyard, including a grand banquet hall with a monumental fireplace, a chapel preserving its original painted vaulted ceiling, and an étuve (medieval steam bath) — a rare luxury for the period. The street-facing facade is austere and fortress-like, while the inner courtyard reveals elaborate flamboyant Gothic tracery and sculptured bas-reliefs.

Jacques Cœur never lived in his own palace. He was arrested in 1451 on trumped-up charges of embezzlement before construction was finished. He escaped prison in 1454, fled France, and died in 1456 on the Greek island of Chios while commanding a papal crusade fleet — never having set foot in the completed building.
