About Bussière Castle
The Château de la Bussière is a privately owned castle situated on the edge of a 7-hectare pond in the Loiret department, between Gien and Montargis. Originally a medieval fortress documented since 1204, the current structure dates primarily from Renaissance-era reconstruction under the du Tillet family in the late 16th century. The castle is known locally as the "Château des Pêcheurs" (Castle of the Fishermen) for its International Freshwater Fishing Museum, created by the Chasseval family in 1962.

The castle cellars contain a preserved coelacanth — a prehistoric fish believed extinct for 65 million years until a living specimen was caught off South Africa in 1938. The castle's specimen was caught in the 1970s. The coelacanth has bony plates instead of scales and four lobe-like fins that resemble proto-limbs, leading scientists to consider it a possible ancestor of land vertebrates. The species has remained virtually unchanged for 350 million years.
