About Château de Gizeux
Château de Gizeux is a privately owned castle in the Loire Valley, continuously inhabited by the same family since 1786. The estate stretches approximately 250 metres, making it the largest inhabited castle in the Touraine Angevine area. Originally a medieval fortress from the 11th century, it was transformed into a Renaissance residence by the du Bellay family in the 16th century.

During the French Revolution, a young woman living at the castle organized local villagers to build false walls and ceilings over the Renaissance gallery, hiding it from authorities who destroyed aristocratic symbols across France. The paintings remained sealed for nearly 100 years until a boy accidentally punched a hole in the false wall while playing, revealing perfectly preserved colors underneath.
