About Château d'Ussé
Château d'Ussé stands on a fortified terrace above the Indre valley at the edge of the Château de Chinon forest, built from white tufa stone typical of the Loire Valley. The site was first fortified in the 11th century, and the current castle blends late Gothic defensive architecture from the 15th century with Renaissance residential wings added over the following two centuries. Charles Perrault reportedly drew inspiration from its silhouette of pointed turrets and white towers when writing Sleeping Beauty in 1697.
