About Collegiate Church of Saint-Mexme
The Collégiale Saint-Mexme is a partially ruined former collegiate church dating back to around the year 1000, making it one of the oldest religious buildings in Chinon. Named after Saint Mexme, a 5th-century disciple of Saint Martin of Tours who founded a hermitage on this site, the church was rebuilt on a basilican plan around 1000 and expanded with a narthex flanked by two towers between 1050 and 1054. The crossing tower collapsed in 1817, destroying the entire eastern section — the choir, transept, and several bays were lost permanently.

The four abstract stained glass windows installed in 2006 were designed by Olivier Debré, a major French abstract painter who died in 1999. The windows were created posthumously from his designs using a special technique without metal framework, allowing uninterrupted fields of color on antique glass panels — a rare approach in stained glass art.
