About Chapel of Saint Radegund
The Chapel of Saint Radegund is a troglodyte chapel carved directly into the limestone cliff east of Chinon, dating from the 11th-12th centuries. The site was originally a hermitage where a recluse named Jean lived in the 6th century, later visited by Queen Radegund of Poitiers, who gave the chapel its name. The nave is hewn from living rock and supported by two monolithic columns, with the cliff face forming walls and ceiling.

The "Royal Hunt" fresco has been cited as possibly the only surviving contemporary portrait of Eleanor of Aquitaine, which would make it unique in European medieval art. However, modern scholars increasingly believe the second crowned figure is actually Henry the Young King, her son. The identity of the riders remains actively debated among art historians.
